CHIMERE workshop 2026 : When Science Meets Extreme Weather
This year’s CHIMERE workshop will be remembered not only for the richness of the scientific discussions but also for the unique logistical choreography necessitated by the June heatwave.
Day 1: It all began in the Esclangon amphitheater—a venue we know well and usually appreciate for its open layout and acoustics. However, by mid-afternoon, the soaring temperatures made the reality undeniable: the heatwave was more than just a weather event; it was hindering our ability to work, concentrate, and collaborate. The irony was not lost on us: a workshop dedicated to atmospheric modeling was forced to adapt, in real time, to extreme atmospheric conditions. We had to reorganize. In the afternoon, the team coordinated a complete move to the cooler basement rooms of the Esclangon building. The organizers set up a new room, albeit with a more basic screen.
Day 2: The atmosphere was different—more intimate, better shielded from the heat, and, in a way, more cohesive. The basement became a hub of concentrated energy, fostering a greater flow of ideas. This minor logistical adjustment reminded us that resilience is not merely a modeling concept; it is a practical skill. In 2026, it became an integral part of the workshop experience itself.
A huge thank you to all the participants for their flexibility and good humor during this extraordinary edition.
