Meningococcal meningitis is a major public health issue in sub-Saharan West Africa and in particular in a region called the "Shelia Meningitis belt", which extends from Senegal to Ethiopia.
The ADCEM project aims to develop an integrated approach to investigate the possible relationship existing between mineral dust, climate and meningitis epidemics in particular to contribute to the development of early warning system for meningitis epidemics over west Africa.
Focused on the 3 countries most affected by the epidemics of meningitis in West Africa (Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali), this study will allow to identify the key variables that play a role in the dynamics of epidemics at the local and regional scales. The ability of a deterministic3-D dust model to provide relevant forecast will be also assessed in connection with specialists working on other human and bacterial factors that affect meningitis epidemics.
