The FP7/MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate, 2009-2011) project is the pre-operational service of the GMES program (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security). Its purpose is to provide the most comprehensive and reliable state on the current atmospheric composition and also short term forecasting (to the scale of a few days). The systems developed for monitoring and forecasting the composition of the atmosphere combines the information provided by the models and observations.
LISA is involved in the component of the project related to the regional aspects and more specifically to European air quality. Associated with INERIS, LISA is implementing a system based on the regional chemistry-transport model CHIMERE for the production of analysis and daily forecasts for major pollutants (ozone, NO2, SO2, CO, particulate matter). In this framework, LISA is particularly interested in developing methods and set up systems assimilating the observations for a posteriori correction of models. To do so, we have developed an Ensemble Kalman filter in order to assimilate (separately and/or together) surface and satellite observations (O3 IASI; NO2 OMI). The first results of surface ozone observations as well as IASI ozone partial columns (0-6km) assimilation are very encouraging.
LISA is also interested in the application of air quality simulations to guide policies to reduce emissions. LISA - in collaboration with INERIS – proceeds to the evaluation of a set of scenarios of emission reduction using the CHIMERE model. An effective and comprehensive set of emergency measures should be retained, and possible pre-assigned to weather type patterns to support the early implementation of an emission control.
