In conjunction with the activities of the "metal pole" of LISA's heritage materials team, students from the "Mesures Physiques" department of the Créteil Vitry IUT took part in the study of atmospheric weathering of an old roof on a Haussmann-style building classified as a "Bâtiment de France" in Belfort (90). This collaborative project, also undertaken with a local roofing company (Entreprise Morel), was the subject of a book chapter featuring contributions from researchers and practitioners specializing in the study of ancient materials used in built heritage. The fruitful cross-fertilization of these multi-disciplinary perspectives took place during a study day organized in Belfort in June 2022 around a shared concern: the reconversion of "industrial and railway heritage" and the treatment of old materials in the context of energy and ecological transitions. This book addresses very contemporary concerns, at a time when the IPCC reiterates in its latest report on the assessment and fight against global warming, the urgent need to act on all scales. Built heritage is one of them, and this book is a milestone in the development of knowledge about ancient materials facing multiple environmental disorders.
