Solar geoengineering: Solution or Risk?

Solar geoengineering proposes hypothetical solutions for lowering the Earth’s temperature. Several possibilities have been suggested, such as artificially adding stratospheric aerosols to reflect some of the sun’s radiation, or manipulating clouds. However, these technosolutionist scenarios appear to pose risks to the planet.

To better explain these concepts, Pasquale Sellitto, a faculty member and researcher at UPEC, answered questions on the IPSL podcast about the impact of potential atmospheric aerosol injections. LISA’s expertise in studying the influence of volcanism and the disruptions caused by the emission of new aerosols provides a better understanding of the potential consequences of this type of geoengineering. Companies are currently conducting field experiments, and this is a field attracting significant interest and massive investment. The question now is how and why it is necessary to detect this type of intervention.
